Tell Hamoukar expedition
Expedition site with first report of the 1999 excavations by a University of Chicago Oriental School and the Syrian Directorate General of Antiquities and Museums team at the Tell Hamoukar site in Northern Syria. Major findings indicate the existence of a relatively large city before 3,500 BC, predating most other ancient towns found elsewhere (such as Ur) and much larger than some of the older settlements found (such as Jericho). Very useful and systematic overview of strategies to improve transportation efficiency. For each strategy there is a description of travel impacts, benefits and costs, equity considerations and applications, with statistics and links to real world initiaves and cases. Each entry has a list of references, many of which are on-line. The strategies included are in 5 categories (Policy And Institutional Reforms, TDM Programs and Program Support, Improved Transport Choice, Incentives To Use Alternative Modes and Reduce Driving, Land Use Management) and include road pricing, park&ride, congestion pricing, telework, new urbanism, flextime, ride sharing, fuel tax increases etc. The only drawback is its strong US bias. The World Health Report 2000 Health Systems: Improving Performance PDF
Full text and tables of the first WHO comparative report on the effectiveness of the world's health systems. The report ranks France's health system 1st, that of the US 37th. The analysis is not just on health sector expenditure, but also on its fairness and some other variables. The statistical annexes carry the detailed results of the survey. There is also a wealth of demographic information in this report. The WHO uses DALE, a life expectancy measure that is adjusted for disability. Industrial Transformation Science Plan
Industrial Transformation is a core science project of the International Human Dimensions Programme (IHDP) on Global Environmental Change. It has resultated in a plan for coordinated research for the period 2000-2005 with the "goal of understanding the ways in which society could combine economic and social development with the reduction of pressure on the environment". The plan consists of a chapter outlining the improtant global environmental changing prompting the research, a chapter outlining the need for multidiciplinary and systems approaches. There is also chapter on often neglected international and geographic contexts in which trnasformation ressearch will take place. And then of course a chapter on research foci. A description of programmatic links with other research efforts rounds up the main part of the plan. The report is well referenced  and illustrated with tables and graphs.
