TECCONILE Nile Basin Homepage
-
Tecconile is the "Technical Co-operation for the Promotion of the Development
and Environmental Protection of the Nile Basin", initiated by the ministers
of the Nile basin countries responsible for water issues. Although TECCONILE
has been superseded by the Nile Basin Initiative, the site stills holds
valuable information. The site features the "Water resources atlas of the
river Nile basic", unfortunately in one large (2.7 MB) PDF-file and with
non-functioning map links. Expectedly, there are also reports of the annual
conferences and an action plan. Finally there is information on INBA, an
international association of Nile experts. 20000629

World Health Report 2000 Health Systems: Improving Performance [PDF]
-
Full text and tables of the first WHO comparative report on the effectiveness
of the world's health systems. The report ranks France's health system
1st, that of the US 37th. The analysis is not just on health sector expenditure,
but also on its fairness and some other variables. The statistical annexes
carry the detailed results of the survey. There is also a wealth of demographic
information in this report. The WHO uses DALE, a life expectancy measure
that is adjusted for disability. Tables are available in Excel format as
well, although these files do not seem to open properly. 20000623

Geoscience photo-collection, featuring historic photos of the geology,
mineral resources and early exploration of Canada from the Geological Survey
of Canada's collection held in the Earth Sciences Information Centre, Ottawa.
There are some 2,000 images. Topics include founders of Canadian geology,
fossils, landscape features, geoscientists at work, human geography ('links
to the past') and arctic exploration. Some pictures date back to the 1880's.
All images are thumbnailed for easy browsing. By the Geological Survey

Transport Demand Management EncyclopaediaTOPSOURCE
-
self description: "Transportation Demand Management (TDM) is the
general term for actions that encourage more efficient use of existing
transportation systems. It includes a wide range of specific strategies.
This encyclopedia is designed to be a primary source of information about
TDM. It provides detailed information on more than three dozen specific
TDM strategies."
-
Very useful and systematic overview of strategies to improve transportation
efficiency. For each strategy there is a description of travel impacts,
benefits and costs, equity considerations and applications, with statistics
and links to real world initiaves and cases. Each entry has a list of references,
many of which are on-line. The strategies included are in 5 categories
(Policy And Institutional Reforms, TDM Programs and Program Support, Improved
Transport Choice, Incentives To Use Alternative Modes and Reduce Driving,
Land Use Management) and include road pricing, park&ride, congestion
pricing, telework, new urbanism, flextime, ride sharing, fuel tax increases
etc. The only drawback is its strong US bias. By the Victoria Transport
Policy Institute. 20000615

Quid TOPSOURCE
Online version of the respectable world almanac from France. Apart
from the general subjects, there is a wealth of geo-information. Most of
it is in the light-yellow column on the right. There are general country
'fiches', flags, maps (click on the map to get more detail) and many, albeit
somewhat stereotypical, photographs. What sets this site apart however
is the country data service, with the possibility to compare up to ten
countries. The geography data include many not found elsewhere: country
circumference, lenght of coastal and land frontiers, lenght of frontiers
shared with neighbouring countries, height and name of highest point, height
and name of lowest point, short geographical description, climate data,
disaster listing. The unique database of information at the commune level
in France (there are 36,511 of them!) is worth mentioning as well. 20000606

-
Tell Hamoukar
expedition
-
Expedition site with first report of the 1999 excavations by a University
of Chicago Oriental School and the Syrian Directorate General of Antiquities
and Museums team at the Tell Hamoukar site in Northern Syria. Major findings
indicate the existence of a relatively large city before 3,500 BC, predating
most other ancient towns found elsewhere (such as Ur) and much larger than
some of the older settlements found (such as Jericho). The findings may
change ideas about the earliest urban history. By the Oriental Institute,

EM-DAT: The OFDA/CRED International
Disaster Database TOPSOURCE
-
Over 12,000 disasters from 1900 to present. The database is set up in order
to aid professionals working in disaster relief and disaster preparedness
programmes. It holds information on three types of disaster: natural, technological
and conflicts. There are standard and enhanced versions. Enhanced versions
have been checked and harmonised, but become available some monts after
the publication of standard series. Databases are available in zipped Excel
or text files. New provisional files become available immediately at the
end of each quarter. Variables are location, LAT-LON, day, time, type,
subtype, homeless, killed, affected, disaster scale value, damage (cost)
and source. For the first three months of 2000 the database includes 94
natural disasters and 65 technological disasters (mainly transport and
industrial accidents). Most of the data are also directly on the website,
with options to list top ten disaster by type and country. Searching for
disasters will become possible in the near future. Additional information
is available: world maps of natural disaster distribution, a bibliographic
databse (planned), a disaster glossary and links. EM-DAT offers a service
to be prompted on new database information. By the Centre for Research
on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED), Louvain, Belgium and the Office
of U.S. Foreign Distaster Assistence (OFDA). 20000403
